The Sponsor Group Conversation: A look at the Sponsors
My two sponsors, Kamil and Chris, act more as friends than authoritative figures in my sponsor group. Although I may not completely connect with everyone in my sponsor group, we have moments in which we bond through the simpler aspects of life, such as laughing at a joke told my Chris or while Kamil shares his extensive collection of dried fruit. My original plan when organizing my interview with Chris and Kamil was to create a list of questions I wanted to ask them but because it’s easy to talk to them, I eliminated the idea of having a question and answer method. I did not want to limit their stories and I wanted them to ask me questions as a way to have a conversation. On the morning of Halloween, I woke up at 6:00 AM to use the restroom and when I opened my door, my roommate and I had an enormous goodie bag filled with candy and Halloween party favors made waiting for us outside. Chris made them to apologize for not being with us for a couple of weeks. This act of kindness reflects why he wanted to become a sponsor—to “let [us] know that it’s okay to take a break from being stressed all day every day and enjoy a couple of sweets and time for ourselves.” Chris often shares with me his adventures with his sponsor group as a first-year and admits that “sponsor groups are a hit or miss.” I asked him to define what “a hit or miss sponsor group” is and he said “sponsor groups are mostly luck. You either love them or you don’t.” Although he says our sponsor group “isn’t as close as [he] would like it to be” he and I acknowledged that thankfully our sponsor group “isn’t toxic like some sponsor groups that have had sponsees move out to different
