It is a challenge to connect with and understand people from different cultures. When tragedy strikes, people tend to find common ground that can bring them together; this would explain why after a tragedy occurs people are more likely to make an attempt to connect with the citizens of that particular nation, region, or area. Even with all of their possible differences, these individuals can come to the conclusion that their differences are not that significant after all. Not only is spreading cosmopolitanism on an individual basis more peaceful and effective, but it can also have a greater impact on the both the individuals spreading and receiving the idea of cosmopolitanism. “People are different, the cosmopolitan knows, and there is much to learn from our differences. Because there are so many human possibilities worth exploring, we neither expect nor desire that every person or every society should converge on a single mode of life…As we’ll see, there will be times when these two ideals—universal concern and respect for legitimate difference—clash,” (Appiah
