Mystical theology was “deriving from Paul’s use of ‘mystery’ in the New Testament to refer to the relationship to God of all those who are ‘in Christ’.” In the second century, In On First Principles, Origen resumed the questions of the incarnation and the Christ by explaining that Logos (Wisdom) was the mediator between God and the world. Through “union”, which he called “contemplative love”, with Logos (Wisdom), humanity gains the knowledge of God, and this kind of unification could be exemplified through Jesus. In the fourth century, St. Augustine included some elements (e.g. love, peace) which discussed about the nature of God in his work Confession. These elements were related to mystical theology. The entire book of Confession was Augustine’s prayer to God. He prayed to God for sparing his sins from temptations and evil ways, and asking God that what God was to him. Other than his own prayer to God, there are two important ideas Augustine mentioned about prayer. The first one is that a person should not listen to what he wants to hear, but listens carefully to what God said. The second one is that we pray for God even though God has known what we need “so that the deliverance you have begun may be completed.” The two main ideas of Augustine’s prayer are getting close to God and letting God’s will be fulfilled on those who pray. Augustine talked about the existence and length of the past, present, and future time. He clarified that future could be forecasted only when it happens in the present since only present exists. God is eternity because God exists before no time and keep existing after he created the time. Dionysius stated that God is “the Eternity of all things and their Time.” He further explained the differences between eternity and time as “in being” and “in birth”. Other than thinking about God as Eternity, Dionysius thought that God is “before Eternity and above Eternity.” Both of their understandings about time are interesting. My interpretations to both of their ideas about time is that Augustine explain the time in a linear way because he thought about time in order (past-present-future); while Dionysius’ explanation of time was in a three-dimensional way in which God was not limited to the time or eternity, but has beyond the narrow Time line. I think this is a very creative and meaningful way to think about
