Instead of a few words Stephen gave a very long speech about events that had taken place in the Old Testament. When he had heard enough, the Sanhedrin accused him of blasphemy and punished him with a stoning. As St. Stephen was getting stoned he said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit,” Stephen then fell to his knees and yelled, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he said this he fell to his knees and became the first martyr of the Catholic faith. Stephen died December 26, 36 A.D., in Jerusalem. His feast day is also December 26. I admire and chose St. Stephen because I think that he showed a lot of courage to be the first martyr and to die for his faith. Stephen showed his faith and believed even when he knew he would die. Now I think that is a true definition of a great saint. Again, God chose Stephen and also worked many miracles through him.
