THE ELIMINATION OF STANDBY POWER IN MONTREAL

ABSTRACT
THE ELIMINATION OF STANDBY POWER IN MONTREAL

Standby power is the energy consumed by electronic devices at all times of the day even when they are not in function. In the U.S.A, ten percent of power consumption is the result of standby power and 1.8 Mt of carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere because of this phenomenon. There are several products available on the market today such as the automatic shutdown socket, which could be used to reduce standby power. This device functions by monitoring the power consumption of all electronic device connected to it; as soon as the power consumption of the electronic device becomes minimal, the device will block current flow and save energy. In contrary to present day models, a more efficient way to reduce standby power is to implement devices such as the automatic shutdown socket directly into the electronic device. The cost per unit for this device is 12.25$ and the salary for the electrical engineer will be 13,000$. In a world of growing technology, the number of electrical devices in every household will increase and we must eliminate standby power consumption as quickly as possible.

1. INTRODUCTION

Electric lighting was first introduced to the world at the World Fair in Paris of 1878. Since then, many changes have been made to electrical power and it is now present in every household in Montreal. On the other hand, with these technological advancements our lives have become even more immersed in technology than before and as result the issue of standby power has become a relevant topic of concern. Standby power is the power consumed by some products over a 24-hour span even when they are powered off. “An individual product draws relatively little standby power but a typical American home has forty products constantly drawing power. Together these amount to almost 10% of residential electricity use” [2]. Although we are using an environmentally friendly energy source, the people of Montreal in general still tend to overlook these small environmentally friendly tricks and as a result power is wasted when a small fix could of otherwise saved it. The province of Quebec is known to be the only place on Earth where 97% of the electricity is generated by hydropower [3]. In addition, according to CBC news Canada, Quebec residents pay the least for their electricity at an average of 6.9¢/kWh (kilowatt hour) [4]. The Island of Montreal could further their lead in lowest electricity bill by saving energy via the means of simply adding a small device, which would eliminate standby power consumption, to the electrical appliances that are present in its households. Not only will residences of Montreal be doing an environmentally friendly deed; they will also be saving money.

2. THE CURRENT SITUATION

The average household has approximately forty electrical devices that are connected to an outlet at all times such as a television, a computer, a phone charger, a clock, etc. It is also
