So, I got a Stanley cup; or I’ve been using my mom’s Stanley cup, and you know I kinda like it. It’s a plain white Stanley, but it’s really big so I could put a bunch of water in it. For some reason though, when I first saw the cup, a small shock of excitement shot through my body. The kind of excitement when you get new clothes or shoes. I never thought I would get excited about using a cup, it’s not the first big water cup I used, matter of I have plenty of cups at home that do the same thing a Stanley cup could. I probably got excited because, for the past few months, Stanley cups have been extremely popular. I’ve seen so many TikToks about them, people have been gifted them for Christmas or their birthdays. My mom actually got the cup for …show more content…
Again, we already have a bunch of portable cups at home so she thought of it as a regular cup. After a while of her using it, I asked her to review her experience with the cup. Most of what she said was really about how it was kinda too big and it didn’t keep her water that cold. Let’s just say she wasn’t in love with it, it was honestly just your average portable cup. After getting her opinion, I started thinking about what was so special about Stanley cups.

Mimetic desire is one term that I could connect with Stanley Cups. Mimetic desire is basically when you want something because someone else has it. It makes perfect sense in this case because we are in a time of influence, and on social media we see many celebrities and influencers use a product and promote it and then all of a sudden the item is sold out everywhere. There was also another term I connected with, which is something I haven’t heard before, but it’s called conspicuous consumption. This is when you buy something simply to display your wealth or social status. I’ve already talked about the expensive limited edition cups, but also to add on that I’ve seen people have several Stanley cups. One of the reasons I found this is because it’s popular to match your outfit with your cup. Another meaning of this term is when a person decides to spend thousands of dollars on a luxury item instead of purchasing a cheaper item that has the same functionality. That term is extremely true though because remember when I said I have several different cups at home, yeah I use these other cups they’re called yeti and rtic. Now to me personally they do the same results they can keep my water cold for days and looking at it, both cups come in many different colors. Now their prices are the same as Stanley or sometimes extremely cheaper but that depends on
