Should a writer be allowed to use they own English? In this article, author Vershawn Ashanti Young discusses author Stanley Fish. Fish is for a “standard language ideology” and Young is against it as he feels that by conforming you are giving up your identity. Young begins the article with immediately disagreeing with a quote from Fish. Young mocked and quoted Fish by stating how Fish thinks teachers should “clear [they] mind of the orthodoxies that have taken hold in the composition world” and how Fish says students have no right to their own language if that language makes them “vulnerable to prejudice”.
