I choose the editorial Ontario should save kids from interminable bus commutes. I believe it has elements of both a strong and a weak argument as it has multiple unnecessary premises and few missing premises. In this editorial, we can identify the conclusion using the principle of charity which is “local schools are closing, forcing young children to spend two hours or longer on a daily bus commute. That’s no way to get an education.” This sentence fits the category of a conclusion as it contains the main reason of the editorial that children should not suffer due to long bus rides since local schools are closing.

The sentence is relevant because it provides a reason for why “local schools are closing” and a reason for it being wrong. This argument is adequate as the inference is not tentative. Secondly, the premises “It’s not just the long hours that are detrimental, say Elgar, but the total disconnect from local life.” (Star Editorial) This claim is acceptable as it is relying on common knowledge since if a child is forced to study outside their community, the child will lack the time to mix and connect with his own community. This statement has very weak relevant to the conclusion as it indirectly supports “that’s no way to get an education” and why the long commutes are bad. Also, using appeal to authority we can say the relevance of the authority is not very relevant as he is one civilian. Similarly, it is a not very adequate as an argument because of “appeal to authority”, the authority is identified, but the individual is not recognized by the experts in the field.
