Station Eleven proves that art transcends tragedy. History has shown time and time again humanity hung in a delicate balance between survival and societal collapse. Shakespeare lived through the black death, a plague in which only five short years, annihilated one third of Europe’s people. Through the tragedy and despair of these times, Shakespeare’s art persevered and strived to enliven the world around him, and lives on well past his death. In Station Eleven, the travelling symphony uses some of Shakespeare’s most significant plays as a way in which to restore the beauty of art to their desolate post-apocalyptic world.
