A while ago France voted to ban ultra-thin models from the catwalk. This immediately caused discussions. There are no official studies to prove the link between the fashion industry and eating disorders, but many experts point to a clear correlation between the two. It is time to give you my opinion.
Ofcourse the media has an influence on people’s ideas of the perfect body image, but is this so wrong? According to the world wide web it is. When you search ‘’eating disorder’’ on the internet you immediately find plenty articles stating there is a link between eating disorders and the fashion industry. The way people react to this is what terrifies me.
A while ago the Saint Laurent campaign with Kiki Willems was banned because she looked too skinny in the photos. Social media exploded. People even started to leave messages on her Facebook account, telling her that she was ugly, unhealthy and she had an eating disorder. This resulted in Kiki feeling terrible. I think stereotyping begins here. Being small does not immediately mean that you have an eating disorder. Just as being a model does not immediately mean that you have an eating disorder. When people around you are telling you that you are too skinny this could lead to feeling insecure in your body. Furthermore, this could lead to psychological problems. A strong correlation has been established between depression and binge eating. I am giving you this example because in my opinion this could be an actual cause of eating disorders.
