NASA’s resilient rover named Opportunity is still on the moon after it landed a decade ago. It has gone through many brutal environments (ferocious dust storms) and technical issue such as hardware malfunction and computer glitches. Obama’s administration baseline budget proposal for fiscal 2015 has lowered the budget of Opportunity and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to zero. During this spring, these old robot will undergo a review along with five others (Mars Curiosity rover, two Mars orbiters, Cassini, and NASA’s Space Agency Express mission) in which they call it “senior review” to ensure that they are still producing enough science to justify its cost for operation. But because of Fiscal 2015, scientist believes that project Opportunity and Lunar Obiter will be shut down to ensure a stable budget. In order to fund these missions, it requires the government to tax more on the wealthy.
Science has brought us many knowledge of the world. Knowledge equals power; therefore I agree they should continue these missions and try to find the funds for it. The possibility of finding a new resource on other planets is crucial and will definitely solve lots of problem back on earth. Not only should we keep funding these missions but should raise more awareness to the public. It is truly depressing if these robots have to be shut down due to budget cuts. These robots have obtain many important information and will continue to do so as long as their funded. New York Times Article: Space Project
