Film is a powerful media “Stories are sites of observations about self and society” (Baran, 15). From its conception film, could be used to capture and narrate a cultural view of a social group upon the minds of its audience. What you saw on the big screen, you believed to be factual and these powerful impressions spoke to the subconscious mind, emotions, and fears of American citizens.

How did Hollywood film companies of yesteryears contribute to the legacy of negative stereotypes still present today? Warner Brothers, Universal Pictures, MGM and even Disney exploited and incorporated the Black Stereotypes in their films. These early films portrayed Blacks as Coons, Toms, Bucks, Mammies, and Pickaninnies first presented to the American audience
