I am a 21-year-old multicultural (black and white) heterosexual male. For the purpose of this assignment I am a heterosexual 16-year-old asian male.
It shocked me to see that one of the top posts for ‘teenage asian male’ was a link to a video clip from the movie Sixteen Candles. This clip is a compilation of the funniest moments of Long Duk Dong, an asian character in the movie. Dong’s character is less of a human being and more of a compilation of stereotypes. He is both a bad driving asian with a terrible accent and a perverse teenage male (Sixteen Candles. 2015). His character is clearly satirical, however the fact that it was so easy to find is disturbing. Sure comedy is comedy, but the fact that there weren’t positive posts listed higher is concerning, especially since this character was created in the eighties. You would think something other than satire would be a top post. Sadly, it’s not. We rarely get mentioned (I mean you didn’t even list that as an option for this assignment) even though the number of multicultural Americans is steadily rising (Multiracial in America. 2015). I found that this is very similar for Asians. For the most part Asians are left out of the race discussion, and have few roles in main stream media (Hess, Amanda. 2016). However, it is far more common to see a racist depiction of an Asian that it is to see a negative depiction of a multicultural person. Excluding the races and just looking at the age and gender difference it became clear that the media portrays adult men as emotionless and aggressive (Olson, Samantha. 2015).
