At first I did not know what to think about the book Picture Bride or the story behind it. But after reading the short summary that was provided for us on the summer packet. I then predicted that the word “Picture” in the title might have been a hit of what the book was about. I interpreted it as the ideal bride that stays home cleaning, cooking, and watching their kid(s) (if they have any) while their husband is at work. I believe that a standard wife is commonly stereotyped because people have this thing programed into their head that they only clean the house and care for their family, even though clearly it could be completely different. This is exactly like the ideal bride belief because back then little girls are told that wives work around the house and don’t get jobs. Also, their mom is their role model and they follow after what she does because that is what they have been told and have to follow. The point of saying all of this is because I am trying to say that maybe back then in America that is what they believed how women should be but maybe in Japan the women are different and have more rights. So, I predict that when the young women gets married she is not going to be a traditional American wife and that will cause problems and drama between her and her husband. Following all my predictions I am going to take my knowledge from history class and apply it to the novel. This young women on her journey to San Francisco, California is going to encounter Angel Island. The reason I know this is because Angel Island was opened from 1910-1940 and when she left Japan it was 1917. Some background knowledge of Angel Island: it was located in San Francisco Bay in America and that is where immigrants would enter the United States and stay until they have been questioned to see if they qualified to stay in the U.S. Also, I know that she is not going to be treated well and have to work very hard
