Stereotypes are learned at an early age. Sometimes, as Paul Gorski describes in “Taco Night,” they are taught in the school system. Gorski describes a festive event that he looked forward to with excitement as a child. Taco Night was arranged by the school and teachers, including various attractions such as piñatas, Mexican song and dance troupes, sombreros, dancing cucarachas, and of course, tacos. What was missing from these events was cultural accuracy. The educational environment of the school was instead reinforcing ideas that “Mexican culture is synonymous with tacos…[and] all Latino people are the same” (Gorski, 2011).
