In The Last Song, Steve Miller, Ronnie’s father, is deeply hated by his own daughter due to the divorce. Throughout the book, Steve tries growing closer to Ronnie, just to continuously be pushed away. Eventually, it is revealed that Steve has cancer and is scheduled to pass away. When Ronnie hears the news, she instantly pushes her stubbornness to the side and takes good care of her father.
