This article explores online dating since the original evolution of the internet. “The present study examines the stigma associated with online relationship initiation and its relation to women’s self-protective behavior. Self-protective behaviors are those an individual engages in to avoid becoming a victim of dating violence” (Cali 853).This statement addresses the negative stigma of online relationships through the eyes of a woman. Woman would rather keep their true identity or address secret because you never know if the person you meet online is the nice gentlemen he claims to be or a psychotic killer waiting to find a victim. In that females may lie before even meeting there partner just because of safety precautions. This is later backed up with substantial evidence from the Department of Psychology stationed in Chicago Illinois, a very credible source for information about the topic of stigma for both males and females.

Self protection is away for women and men alike to protect themselves from online predators or murderers. This stigma may cause a woman to stay hesitant, to giving the person there dealing with any real personal information which then leads to lying, due to the fear they have of the person there interacting with online being who they really say they are.
