From the time NASCAR was converted into a professional sport from its association with crime in 1948, it’s been dominated by male participants. Though originally it was driven primarily by a male fan base, NASCAR has gained a more diverse audience which now consists of 37 percent female viewers, and the demographic of an audience usually invokes a response in the demographic. For NASCAR’s athletes this is not the case. Since it was formed, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, has only had roughly 40 female drivers! That’s only a 1.4% female to male ratio! So why is the rate of female NASCAR participants so drastically low?

When they are young, they are mostly introduced to fashion, cooking or how to take care of the houses. One reason for this is because of the correlation between gender and toys. People believe that if it is a boy, then you gave them cars or action figures in childhood to play with, and if it is a girl, then you give them a Barbie doll or a kitchenware set to play with. There is too little information about how this tradition started, but people still follow this type of tradition. Some research shows that babies’ exposure to hormones while they are in the womb can cause their toy preference to emerge soon after birth. Some people also believes that this is evolution made us in such a way. It is true that if you are exposed to a particular subject in childhood, you are going to develop an interest in it. Yes, most of the time they are, but drivers know how risky it is to be on track or to drive a fast car. So, they feel hesitant when it comes give their daughter a chance to race. They are aware about how dangerous it is. In the article by Ryan McGee a senior ESPN writer, he talks about how he took his eight year old daughter to her first NASCAR championship. He also took her down to pit road, and it were only few feet away from the race action. His daughter was taking pictures of the race, and suddenly he realized the danger of racing, he thought what if someone looses their balance and crash right near where my daughter is standing. So, he grabbed her daughter from the back of her t-shirt and took her to the media center roof, which was two stories above it all. At that moment, he saw NASCAR as violence and not racing. He was not comfortable with his daughter standing only few feet away from the track. People are protective about their daughter than their son. Too much of the protectiveness about women has also lead to small amount women
