Stonewall Jackson, who was a Confederate general, was actually born on January 21, 1824 to the name of Thomas Jonathan Jackson. He also happened to be one of the best-known Confederate commanders. He was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He served as a Confederate general under Robert E. Lee. He was the third, out of 4 children.
When Jackson was just 2 years old, his dad and Elizabeth, his older sister passed away. They were killed by a typhoid fever. His mom, being a young widow, remarried to Blake Woodson. Jackson and the rest of his siblings would always butt heads with their stepfather, so they were sent to live with relatives they had in what was Jackson’s Mill, Virginia back then. Eventhough he happened to be older than his classmates, at first he struggled really badly with his course load. To make things worse, his peers would occasionally tease him about his poor family. In 1846, he managed to graduate, being the 17th out of 59 other students, from military academy just on time to fight in the Mexican-American War, where he fought from 1846-1848. Soon after, he left the military to began a teaching career.
He began his teaching career at Virginia Military Institute. There, he worked as a professor of natural and experimental philosophy, and as and artillery tactics professor. What Jackson taught in philosophy class was basically what is taught now a days in Physics class. Although, his classes did also cover astronomy, acoustics, and other science subjects. Jackson, having a cold demeanor and strange quirks, made him become very unpopular among his students.
Jackson also believed that something was wrong with him. So, one thing he did was that he would keep one of his arms raised while teaching, hoping that it would hide an unevenness that didn’t even exist in the length of his extremities.
