Suleika Jaouad was living a pretty successful life as young adult in 2010. She had recently graduated from Princeton University, moved to Paris away from home and was working as a paralegal in a fancy law firm. Everything seemed to be going amazing for Suleika, sadly at age 22 Suleika would be diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a rare blood disease. Overnight Suleika’s entire world would be shattered. The veil that was her invincible youth had been taken from her and her journey of survival would begin. I want to apologize, for I know I will soon make the life of my loved ones hell. My mother will have to drive four hours in the middle of the night to take me to the hospital in New York City. Family will have to take sick days from work. (P 7/14/12)
Suleika is troubled and bothered by the fact that she will be more reliant on her family. She feels an immense amount of guilt because shes troubling her family. More than likely her family views her health as their number one priority but as a result of the stress and depression she is forced to deal with while undergoing treatment she considers herself a nuisance to her family. Having to depend so much on your family at this stage in your life is a very challenging thing to do, its one of the many issues cancer patients in their 20’s have to deal with. Another issue Suleika was forced to deal with like many other cancer patients of her age was trying to maintain an active social life. As a result of the extensive chemotherapy Suleika had to spend long periods of time in the hospital. After 5 months of hospitalization Suleika was finding it hard to even pick up phone calls from her closest friends(P
