On March 22, 2002, in the case of Sultaana Freeman v. State of Florida, Freeman filed suit declaring that the revocation of her drivers license illegal and unconstitutional and to order the Defendant State of Florida to reinstate her license. Freeman took a photo wearing a niqab with her hijab, inspired heavily on her strict religious beliefs. Only Freeman’s eyes were visible in her license. The State sent Freeman letters stating that Freeman would have to be re-photographed without her veil; otherwise her license would be revoked.
