Can We Truly Be Nonconformists? As much as everyone likes to think they are just being themselves and doing what they want, everyone in some way is a conformist. Whether it is their fashion style, social media habits, or musical preferences, most people just want to please others and fit in. Those that go against these trends are nonconformists, or labeled as “outcasts” or as being weird. However, even if you don’t conform to “normal society,” you conform to being the “outcast.” Emerson outlined conformity and nonconformity in “Self-Reliance.”

There are several acts of nonconformity that are popular in the United States right now. For example, the whole LGBTQ+ community went against society’s standards and have lately been very active in trying to get equality. However, as it may have started with very few people going against the standards and sticking up for their rights, many people, some not even within the LGBTQ+ community, have taken an interest in furthering their rights through protests, speeches, and even social media. Since the manager told the girls they were dressed inappropriately, Sammy wanted to stand up for them and be the big shot. After they left, he quit his job even though it seemed like his family really needed him to have it. He expressed an act of nonconformity by doing what he wanted despite what he should have done or needed to do. This is similar to what Guy Montag did in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In Montag’s life, books are banned and burned if found. However, he enjoys looking at and reading books so he quietly and sneakily steals them when he can on the jobs of burning them. No one really goes against the “no books allowed” rule, making him a nonconformist.
