1. The nurses want to have voice in decisions that affect the patient care environment and their ability to deliver quality care. In order to gain control over practice and fight management, unions are formed. Collective Bargaining helps nurses find a voice to bring change in the health care environment and create an environment that allows nurses to achieve the best possible patient health outcomes. I think nursing unions both enhance and diminish the image of nursing. The main reasons of strike at Allina Health Hospitals were health insurance policies, staffing levels, and workplace safety. According to the Video, 4800 nurses represented by Minnesota Nurses Association went on a strike at five Allina Hospitals. On one hand, the union gives the nurses a chance to negotiate enforceable contracts. It gives the nurses job security, provides a voice against the management, more pay, benefit packages, and it puts the focus on patient care rather than just profit. The union’s spokesperson, Rose Roach confirmed this by stating that the nurses will always put patient care above profit.
In addition, she stated that the union did accept the goals offered by the hospital management, but the management keeps pushing the goals further and further which led the union to go on a strike. In this scenario, achieving all the demands of the nurses will require …show more content…
I do believe that IPE could eliminate the need for nursing unions in the future. The whole idea of working in interdisciplinary teams is not merely exchanging message about the patient, but also communication among health care providers to know each other better and respects each other’s opinions. IPE will teach health care providers to work together and this will build a strong relationship among health care providers. I believe instead of nurses sticking out for nurses or physicians sticking out for physicians, it should be one health care provider sticking out for another health provider when something goes
