Summary: Legalizing Marijuana In Canada

Introduction Legally smoking marijuana is soon to become a reality for Canadians, yet there are still issues around the law, its timing and between the federal and provincial government. A main issue portrayed in media is the fact that the government is yet to decriminalize the use of marijuana before the legalization proceedings move forward as many people are still being convicted. Furthermore, there is a clear distinction between racialized people who get criminalized more often for the usage of marijuana, than white people. Another ongoing issue is between the federal government and provincial governments, who are asking for more time yet are still being pressured to meet the deadline for legalizing marijuana. People commit a crime when they commit an act or failure to when under legal responsibility to do so (making them criminals) (Griffiths, 2014); however, many of these media articles portray that smoking and possessing marijuana is not wrong and people should no longer be held accountable for it despite it still being illegal in Canada. It is true that marijuana is going to be legalized, but the law still has not been passed and it is still considered an offense according to the criminal law. Even some police forces are going against their code and not charging the people committing the “offense”, in this case being simple possession of marijuana and using the drug. However, there is still some possibility that the legalization of marijuana may get pushed back or may not even happen, will the police let these ‘criminals’ walk away with committing the act till then? Will the society begin abusing the law, and continue to abuse the system? If marijuana was decriminalized till the law has been passed it would be a different story, but it hasn’t been. The law of it being an illegal drug is still in place, the suppliers of marijuana are still committing an offense yet managing to get away with it just because it is soon to be legalized.
