Anthem is a novel written by Ayn Rand, and it shows the point of view of how everyone treated each other differently even though they were supposed to act the same. Equality 7-2521 states, “It is our second Transgression of Preference, for we do not think of all our brothers, as we must, but only of one, and their name is Liberty 5-3000” (Rand 41). Equality 7-2521 is a person who is experiencing the Transgression of Preference by favoring one person over all of the others. Equality prefers Liberty, a woman, over all of the other women, which is not allowed. In real life today, favoritism exists in many different places. In some cases, students or teachers at school treat each other differently. Some teachers are nicer to other students and will give them extra help that they are not willing to do with other people. Favoritism creates a negative impact on students' self-esteem and ruins their confidence. When those students lose confidence in themselves, that's when things start to go poorly in life. For instance, students are getting stressed by others making fun of them, or even making each other feel left out. This is when bad grades start to show and depression comes into play. Therefore, treating others differently is just causing more and more problems in today's society every single day. Leaders of the society teach that it is immoral to prefer one person over another. For that reason, in Anthem, men and women are being treated completely differently from one another. One example is, “We remember the Home of the Infants where we lived till we were five years old, together with all the children of the City who had been born in the same year” (Rand
