Carla Freeman addresses pink-collar work in the ethnography High Tech and High Heels in the Global Economy regarding the life of Afro-Caribbean women in Barbados working in the new high-tech industry called “informatics”. Essentially, they work in the service industry, such as data entry, insurance companies and airline reservation (Freeman, 2010). There is a code of professionalism that they must follow in the workplace by being demeanour and to dress properly. The importance of dress and appearance operates as a form of surveillance and discipline as it reflects their work ethic, productive capacity and impacts the company’s image (Freeman, 2010).
