“The Coddling of the American Mind” is an article written by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt. Lukianoff is a graduate of American University and Stanford Law School and describes himself as a “pro-choice liberal.” Haidt is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania. In the article Lukianoff and Haidt state that “A movement is arising, undirected and driven largely by students, to scrub campuses clean of words, ideas, and subjects that might cause discomfort or give offense.” The article is well written and gives multitudes of support for every example given; so many examples in fact, that it gets difficult to comprehend. They visit many universities to show that this issue is not centralized, but doing so does not give each university enough detail to fully show the problems that the students are facing on each campus. Each campus has its own student culture and learning style, so it is interesting to see that colleges across the country are facing the same difficulties. Lukianoff and Haidt could have spent more time collecting student testimonies and surveys on each campus to give the article more of a personal feeling to their readers, who are most likely students themselves.
