Furthermore, when Dunny found out that he was in love with Mrs. Dempster and chose to go to war instead of picking between her and his mother, Mrs. Dempster in a way saved him from being with Leola because we now how much of a “pin-head” she is. On the other hand, Mrs. Dempster also serves as a “life sentence” to him because of the caring he has to do for her. When Dunny says “So much against my will I got Mrs. Dempster into a public hospital for the insane.” (164). Dunstan does not have to do this for Mary and put her into hospital and care for her, but since he feels that he is responsible for her condition since her husband died, her son has ran away so she does not really have someone to fall back on except for him, which is why he cares for her even during a tough time of depression. Moreover, she has always been a main priority in his life from childhood, as he voluntarily went to help her out without Mrs. Ramsay asking him to, and now when he has become an adult, caring for her has also become a habit of him which still holds a major importance in his life which is defined by the quote of his “lifelong involvement with Mrs. Dempster”
