The Vietnam War is a very controversial war throughout history. Racism continues to be a problem as the country of the United States progresses. Throughout the story, Fallen Angels written by Walter Dean Myers, the characters learn how to deal with the apparent issues of racism while fighting for their country. The main character, Richie Perry, is seventeen years old when he is drafted and arrives in Vietnam. Richie signs up for the draft while dealing with other issues. Richie is closest to his brother, Kenny, who later also signed up for the draft. Richie’s father left him as a child, and his mother is a severe alcoholic.
