Fort Dobbs was located in piedmont region of North Carolina. In the town of Fourth Creek and now known as Statesville. This fort was named after the past governor Arthur Dobbs. Dobbs had a role in designing the fort. Governor Dobbs was in office from 1689 to 1765. Fort Dobbs was wooden, house-like, and 3 stories. The fort had a good reason to be built and that reason was to protect British settlers. The fort was also used as a military camp and the fort was used for defense in the French and Indian war. Fifty soldiers were based at the fort but that number was inconsistent because it changed through out the years. Fort Dobbs had a short period of existence from 1756 to 1766.
Fort Dobbs was attacked between 8 to 9 o’clock at night on February 27. It was attacked by 60 to 70 cherokee indians. Captain Waddell was on frontier duty when the fort was attacked. He heard suspicious noises and went to investigate and he realized it was the Cherokee Indians. A group hadn't walked but 300 yards and there was a attack. When the retreaded there had been an attack at the fort also. The Indians took six of the Fort Dobbs horses. There was two men injured in the attack.
