If you could travel back in time to the days of the revolutionary war and replace some of the characters in Leutze's painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware with those found in the mosaic it would have a profound impact on American History. If these individuals had been included, we may never have had many of our wars and the history we are studying today would be very different. For example, if African American, Native American, and women’s voices had been heard during the Revolutionary War we could have had true freedom from the start. We would not have enslaved others and may have been able to avoid the Civil War altogether. The Civil Rights movement with all of its casualties would not have happened. European settlers would have been able to live peaceably with the Native Americans avoiding thousands of deaths and immense heartache. …show more content…
For example, it could show how the meaning of liberty has changed over the years and varied from individual to individual. To slaves during the Civil War freedom was mainly about not being owned by another whereas to women fighting for the right to vote freedom was more about equal rights. In regards to how society shapes freedom, an example of this is how slaves could not be freed until society saw the evils of slavery. Finally, these individuals can help us see the boundaries of freedom. During the Revolutionary War, our country won our independence, but it was limited. The freedom only applied to white men and did not include slaves, Native Americans, or women. The inclusion of these people can give us a fuller understanding of true American history and the long battle it took for every American to be truly
