Throughout the course of the novel In the Time of the Butterflies, Julia Alvarez tells the story of the Mirabal sisters, who fought against Rafael Trujillo, the dictator of the Dominican Republic. She writes about the four sisters (the three who were murdered and the one who survived), as well as their childhoods, daily lives, and eventual acts of rebellion against Trujillo. In order to fight against Trujillo’s silencing practices, the sisters had to speak out and cause a scene. Trujillo had many cruel and terrible ways of maintaining his power over the Dominican Republic, but it all boils down to one thing.
