In Janice DePeel’s “Chi-Jean and the Red Willows”, the principle “Learning is holistic, reflexive, reflective, experiential, and relational”, is truly illuminated. The story does a marvelous job of touching upon the experiential aspect of learning by vividly detailing the gestures Mooshum uses. For instance, when “Mooshum jumped forward from the rock onto his feet, startling everyone, so they too jumped.” (DePeel), Mooshum brought the story to life, captivating his listeners and creating an unforgettable experience. This approach allowed Mooshum to speak in a language his listeners did not speak fluently, therefore enhancing the story’s authenticity.
