John Luther Adams was greatly inspired by the vast landscape of Alaska. In both Become Ocean and Inuksuit, the landscape of Alaska and all the changes happening in the world influenced his work. In Become Ocean, John Luther Adams created a single movement depicting the sounds of nature in Alaska. When listening to this piece, I was reminded of nature documentaries I have seen. His compositions were beautifully matched with the sounds one may experience when exploring Alaska. John Luther Adams’ style of transcribing sounds in nature without recording them likely contributed to reality of nature.
