Today, we can occasionally see a stunning lack of diversity in even the most common things. Even now situations arise where, for example, In Jena McGregor’s article “Fixing Hollywood’s Diversity Problem”, it is said that this year’s Academy Award nominees are completely white-washed, and not a single woman is to be seen in the directing or screenwriting categories. This would be an example of how America needs to fix their diversity problem.

One of the problems surrounding this topic is the fact that although there are six-thousand members in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, a whopping 93% of them are white, while 73% are male. If it wasn’t already clear enough, this obviously shouldn’t be correct. Sadly enough, according to Darnell Hunt, a UCLA professor and director of the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American studies, this year’s nominees were “more or less an accurate reflection of the way the industry is structured and the way the Academy is populated.” This means that we should also be looking at the root of the problem; the hiring in the industry.

Some say that this year’s nominees wouldn’t all be white if we just had more diversity overall. It sounds quite easy, doesn’t it? Just hire some more diverse actors and actresses, and your problem’s solved. Dolefully, trying to improve diversity by hiring more women and minorities will most likely take a very long time.
