Somehow, someway, Diaz leaves the reader feeling hopeful for Oscar, and emotionally satisfied, even though Oscar has died. Oscar doesn’t leave the world lamenting the life he has lived or regretting the decisions he has made. He leaves the world overcome with joy, relishing in the beauty of the love he never had. Love, after all, was the driving force of the whole novel. Everything Oscar did, he did for love; for something he so longed for yet never quite reached.
