A 2004 John Newbery Honor was given to Olive’s Ocean by Kevin Henkes. This book tells of Martha Boyle, a twelve-year-old girl who is being haunted by the death of her classmate Olive Barstow. Although the two girls were not friends, Martha learns over time that the two were in fact more alike than either had realized. As Martha attempts to get over Olive’s death, which she witnessed, she must also deal with fighting parents, deception from close friends, and improving her relationships with others.
