Phoenix Jackson’s stasis occurs with the pre-existing condition of her grandson who has swallowed lye, the reason Phoenix makes regular visits to town. She is fully aware of the tumultuous journey ahead of her, and the struggle that lies ahead. When she begins her journey, she climbs the hill, she feels fatigued and quips, “Something always take a hold of me on this hill- pleads I should stay”. When she says this, she means that the journey is cumbersome and tiring, such that the tribulations make her want to stay back and cancel the trip, but deep down her love for her grandson keeps her going. Each time she takes a trip to town, she is tired and worn out, but she chooses to complete her trip because she wants her grandson to get better.
