In The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, the author used the motif of physical appearance to show how Mary Anne changed from her innocent american life, and adopted the Vietnamese culture. Throughout this chapter the physical appearance has been represented to show how Mary Anne underwent change. The clothes she arrived in were “cut-off blue jeans and a black swimsuit top”(Page?). These clothes are of an average day citizen, representing the innocence that Mary started with.
