Book Review:
The book I chose to read was Revolution Against Empire: Taxes, Politics, and the Origins of American Independence. The book was written by Justin du Rivage. Rivage graduated magna cum laude, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa fraternity at Pomona College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He then went on to attend the University of Cambridge where he earned his Master of Philosophy degree. Eventually he decided to attended Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut where he success earned his Doctor of Philosophy in History. Next, he went on to become an Associate Research Scientist while he began working on his first and only publication Revolution Against Empire: Taxes, Politics, and the Origins of American Independence. (Exiger,1) The first theme of the book review is that of personalities of the people in power. The first personality of power I will discuss is that of King George the third. King George who came into power in 1760 had a new way of doing things. He father and grandfather ran things quite similar to one another but George III wanted to make his mark. He supported the strengthening of the monarchy and expanding its power over the British Colonies. (117) King George III “vowed to rule above the party and without the constraint of politicians” (351). He allowed the long excluded Tories to re-enter the political scene of London. His actions from the start of his reign began to draw lines within the Whig party. For the second personality of power we jump across the pond to the American colonies. Diving into the political climate of colonial America we find Thomas Jefferson leading the charge. Thomas
