4 November 2015 Scholarly Article: Women Stereotypes The main purpose of this article is to express how the stereotypes of women came to construct their gender role and built the identities they have in today’s society. It became known throughout the 1950s, women were considered “domestic caregivers, with sole responsibility for the home and child rearing” (Holt 1). This was considered the concept of the ‘ideal’ woman that “gives a clear picture to women of what they were supposed to emulate as their proper role in society” (1). If women continue to take the aspects of housewife, they wouldn’t know outside knowledge other than being a housewife. The reason being is that “Society plays an immense role in the construction of individual gender roles, and in turn our identity.” (1) The impact of women’s lives makes a contribution to do work such as receiving jobs, doing work force, and cooking for everyone. The most important information in this article is the Women's Movement and the four types of stereotypes descriptions in the 1950s. From the studies of Courtney and Lockeretz, they found that “90% of women were shown in “nonworking roles in the home” which refers to the unpaid labor of housework and child rearing. Women were found to be eleven times more likely to be associated with housework than were men” (2). The four stereotypes were about the women’s perspectives in the 1950s. Women had been educated in “fields that seemed not to be accessible to women at first and have birth control which “also became readily available during this time” (2) Studies show that women still felt it necessary to adhere the domestic ideal as much as possible in order to maintain their identity as a “good woman, mother, and wife”. If we accept the author's line of reasoning, the implications are that we’re believing that every woman is the same of reinforcement the idea of the ‘ideal’ woman. Decades ago, women began to take upon roles of solitude and developing a sense of working for everyone around them. We wouldn’t know that the facts of seeing the aspects of the 1950s. As time went on, they were able to do advantages such as voting.
If we reject the author's line of reasoning, the implications are that we’re not knowing the development of the changing role towards women building their identity in society. the fact that the women only begun to change their role is because of the fact the Women’s Movement was there to help them instead of decades ago that led them towards gaining the independence. We wouldn’t know that women have possibilities to find happiness with not just only being a
