The central idea of my book, Shackles from the Deep, is about a professional archaeologist named Michael H. Cottman. Michael, who is curious about his past, sets on a journey to find his past culture, and where his origins are from. Michael goes on to find out about the wreckage of a sunken slave ship. This slave ship was almost 300 years old, it carried thousands of slaves across oceans, and for decades. The sunken slave ship was called the “Henrietta Marie”. Michael was inspired to study this ship, and the mysterious things it could reveal about Michael’s origin. “It’s about how I, along with others, pieced together a 300-year-old transatlantic puzzle that would teach me about myself—and where I came from” (Cottman 19).
