After reading Chapter 2 of Shi & Singh’s Delivering Healthcare in America: A Systems Approach and reviewing Table 2-5 on page 65 of the text, I found that both market justice and social justice complement each other. Market justice refers to individual resources, choices, and abilities that determine the distribution of health care services in a free economy. The principle of market justice originates from individualism and self-interest (Budetti, 2008, pg. 92). The types of medical services provided are based on the ability and willingness of the patient to pay. Social justice is defined as equal distribution of health care services to members of a society. This principle generally refers to those members who are at a societal disadvantage.
