In the speech “Equal Rights for Women” the author, Shirley Chisholm, explains her opinion of women being discriminated against throughout the U.S.. Chisholm uses the example of women being asked “Do you type?” when being interviewed for a job. She points out that this predetermines that women will be working as secretaries, teachers and other low priority jobs. Chisholm also states that women do not have very many places as managers, even though more than half of the U.S. population consists of women “...women occupy only 2 percent of the managerial positions.”(Paragraph, 8).
