Sophia becomes very close to John Andre and soon develops feelings for him. She soon doubts that what her brother William and the rest of her family is fighting for is the right decision. John Andre finds a liking to her and writes her a poem, plays his flute for her, and gives her a blue ribbon to tie her hair up with. John Andre is soon moved which caused Sophia deep grief. Her brother William comes home and she finds him in the sugarhouse. After she leaves the sugarhouse to go tell her parents the news about Williams return she says this, “And as preachers remind us of Hell to shape our destiny, know that the Hell I saw shaped mine” (118). This quote is showing that what Sophia saw in the sugarhouse, the awful shape that all the patriots were in, including her brother, opened her eyes to how awful they were being treated. Sophia soon asks John Andre to help her free her brother but he tells her that she can’t and Sophia reminds him that he said that he would do anything for her as long as she asked. When she reminded him of this his response was a vow to a lady is not the same as a promise to a girl
