Family can help each other overcome challenges and tragedies by supporting them. The novel, “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” is a novel written by Christopher Paul Curtus. The novel takes place in 1963 and mainly focuses on the Watsons trip to Birmingham, as well as many other important factors. The author develops the theme through the character of Bryon by showing how he supports Kenny with many things such as when Larry Dunn took his gloves, when he helps him with his lazy eye, and he helps him overcome the trauma of the church bombing incident.

At the beginning of the novel, Kenny is becoming nervous that people might notice his lazy eye and start to make fun of him. On page 62, the author states, “Finally, Byron gave me some good advice. He noticed that when I talked to people I squinched my lazy eye kind of shut or that I'd put my hand on my face to cover it.” This is one of the many ways Bryon helps Kenny. When Bryon finds out about this, he decides to beat up Larry Dunn because Kenny is his brother. On page 71, the novel states, “Larry Dunn didn't say anything so Byron grabbed his hair and jerked his head up and down a couple of times. I guess that means yes.
