The Combahee River Collective was group of black feminist who formed in Boston in the late seventies. The purpose of writing the black feminist statement was to inform others about black women experiences and struggles against oppression. Additionally, they wanted to be distinguished that their oppression was different than white women, since they had to fight against sexism and racism at the same time. They wrote how they found it challenging to separate “ race from class from sex oppression because in our lives they are most often experienced simultaneously”. In addition, they focus on their own oppression instead of others because they felt that if black women ended oppression everyone else’s would “be free since our freedom would necessitate
