The second media source being explored, is a documentary titled, Chasing Asylum, which was created and directed by Eva Orner in 2016. This documentary explores the journey which asylum seekers take to reach Australia, as well how they are treated once they get here. This media source is vastly different than the previous ABC article, in what it talks about and how it presents the information.
The ABC article contained several quotes from people in the public sector, however, it did not go into detail on living conditions on Manus Island. Instead, it stated that they could be improved. The documentary created by Orner, does not dance around the topic, rather, figuratively gets its hands dirty. These two media sources are vastly different in how they present their information. In these interviews, the asylum seekers talk about why they make the trip to Australia. As well as this, they talk about what they found when they arrived here and how this has changed their outset on life. An example of one such interview can be seen in figure 2. For the sake of safety, neither the name or the face of the refugee were presented. Figure 2: Interview with asylum seeker.
These interviews, humanise the refugees, and allows the viewers to understand what would drive someone to make the trip. As well as this, they show the viewers how inhumanly the asylum seekers are treated when they arrive.
Orner’s Chasing Asylum, contains a large amount of unique, on the ground footage from the offshore processing camps. This footage shows the true conditions of the camps is worse than the other media outlets make out. An example of one such clip can be found in figure 3.
