Studies have show that both the trainer and trainee have a high level of satisfaction of the FTO program (Doerner, 2012). Rookie officers have conveyed that the FTO program best helped them understand how to do police work (Doerner, 2012). Both trainers and trainees agree that the length of the FTO program should be extended (Doerner, 2012). This is largely because rookies will not receive enough “criminal complaints” during the FTO program as statistics have shown 75-85% of calls for service are not criminal (Doerner, 2012). Rookie officers that quit the FTO program have stated they felt overwhelmed and not prepared for police work (Doerner, 2012).
