Almost immediately the viewer is greeted with a meteor hurtling through the sky… It crashes into the Earth, an alien exits from the crater covering the space with shimmering light that grows like a cancer cell, expanding. This world is LENA’s world. This is her story… It is no coincidence that Lena’s occupation is that of a biologist, having the writer ensure this to be an integral part of the story.

This is a classic hero’s journey of Lena, the hero, who is introduced via voice over whilst describing the process of cell division as it corresponds with the cell division of the life form upon landing on earth.

It is clear from writer’s structure that the sci-fi genre he’s created, sustains believability throughout the script. This is evident

This I feel is because the average screenplay is 120 minutes, and this is based on 127. I will give explanation for why this is.

The inciting incident is initiated when the ambulance transporting both Lena and her husband Kane is hijacked by SUV’s by where spec ops exit, taking both of them, but as Lena struggles, she’s sedated. (p.12)

From here Lena approaches the first threshold, to which she stabs a soldier in the neck with a tranquilizer (page 21), showing she’s past the point of no return, thus needing to run to get where she needs to be, by her husband, Kane’s side.

The refusal however, takes place after this (p.30), with a discussion between Lena and Dr. Ventress, a psychologist. Lena wants to find out what is making Kane sick. Ventress refuses the offer, but in light of Lena’s persuasion of being a biologist, she accepts and the initial four women on this “suicide mission” become five, all with different scientific

This where the fun and games begin and they awake in the special world not knowing exactly how they got there (p.44). This is achieved by Lena having woken from a flashback/dream of her and Kane in happier times, before he went on his mission. The belly of the whale happens (p.51) when the women are introduced to an over sized specie of what looks like alligator, nearly taking one of the women for is lunch, however, not at mid point yet, this is a build up to that of the first death which happens directly (p.64), yet not to any of the women, but cleverly done as they watch it happen on a recording from the last troop who set foot on the same mission.

One by one the women diminish, leaving only Lena and Ventress, who makes her own way to the heart of the source, the tree of life, disguised as a lighthouse, the uterus of where life begins.

This analogy of cancer is crossed referenced with the same pathological process of a cancer manipulating body cells, like a virus, inhibiting the cells as they divide, spreading the virus, causing more cells to divide, invading the whole body, the twist is, it’s invading the earth. The cure is to blast the cell from within, obliterating the opponents used to create this
